How to get a working visa in Japan

As you know, there are many ways to get a valid working visa in Japan.
Here I will talk about Highly skilled professionals and  Engineer/Specialists in humanities/International services visas. Besides that, there are several working visa categories you can apply for in your particular expertise area.

You can apply working visa before coming to Japan or after finishing your education in Japan too. First, you need to find a sponsored company that can give you a valid working visa.

Basically, if you have these qualifications, you can apply for your working visa in Japan.

Note: This will be slightly different from the company

  • General degree in your expertise area
  • Japanese language proficiency above N3 or some companies doesn’t require Japanese(English only is a good fit)
  • A letter from your future employer(act as a sponsor)

If you are willing to learn Japanese first and then want to apply for a working visa, it will enlarge your search area because you have the Japanese language too. You are already earned your general degree in your home country and participation in a Japanese language school in Japan, you don’t need to go to a technical college or Japanese university after your graduation from the language school. You can apply for a job when you are qualified. Here is some job searching site in Japan that may help you.

  • Gaijinpot – This site also helps to find a part-time job too.
  • LinkedIn  – Professional networking for expanding your circle and job seeking etc.
  • Glassdoor – Salaries, reviews, and Job seeking
  • Openwork – Job seeking, company review

What is the difference between High skilled professionals and Engineer/Specialists in humanities/Int’l Services visas?

The biggest advantage is having a ‘High skilled professional VISA’ can help change your resident status to a permanent Visa in a short period. There is a point-based system for permanent residents. If you have the above visa and gained a total of 70 points or more, you can apply for a permanent resident within 1 or 3 years.

And you can change your job easily, but remember this visa is valid for a given company job only.
Other benefits are the same as a General working visa.
